FEATURE : Baba Agba : Beyond Words Storytelling

By Motionviu Photographer and filmmaker, Baba Agba describes the creation of images as his “first love”. Born and raised in Warri, Delta State, Baba’s adoration for film started when he was about six years old. He describes his childhood with passion as he explains, “Back then, I would use the family camcorder to record documentaries as we did a road trip into the countryside to spend Christmas with my grandma”. After obtaining a BSc in Economics from the University of London as well as completing a film degree from The Met Film School, the specialised cinematographer came home, determined to rediscover Nigeria and its culture. He explains, “I am fully committed to telling our own stories”. Baba’s photography carries a sense of intensity, with each picture gathering the viewer’s emotion; he is able to capture a story beyond words.” The film industry in Nigeria is perhaps the most saturated and fertile film industry in the world, how can a filmmaker differentiate himself from the million, if not trillion others in Nollywood? According to Baba his strength lies in “a solid technical and artistic understanding of film” which is indeed true as most filmmakers in Nollywood are not trained in filming institutions, this fact sets him aside from the rest.
